10 Christmas Gifts for People in Healthcare

~SANTA'S COMING~

December is here which means Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa is around the corner! So, start making those lists and checking them twice ✓✓ Finding items to add to your gift list, or shopping for people going into healthcare can be difficult...and expensive. Below 10 gift recommendations for people in healthcare ranging from $5-300.

1. ERKA Stethoscope
Stethoscopes are a NECESSITY for all individuals working in healthcare and it's important to find a good quality one so that you are able to hear all breath sounds, heart sounds, abdominal sounds, and so on. Unfortunately, stethoscopes are not cheap. Thankfully, ERKA makes great quality stethoscopes for an affordable price! Plus, they have a variety of color options allowing you to find one that fits you best!

2. A good medical book
There are SO MANY great books out there right now that really allow you to think about patients, your career, and all that it entails. They move you in ways that you couldn't even imagine (sometimes be prepared with some tissues). One of my favorite books that i have read is "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi. This book shares the story of a neurosurgeon in his journey to find the meaning of death through his patients.

Other books:
"Complications" by Atul Gawande
"Better" by Atul Gawande
"Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande
"When the Air Hits Your Brain" by Frank Vertosick

3. Bose QuietComfort 35 Headphones
Noise canceling headphones can be life savors while in school. They allow you to study in pretty much any setting with the comfort of a quiet background or music. I personally do not have Bose but these specific headphones were on my Christmas list this year. I have used my friends and they are simply amazing and truly cancel out so much noise while producing great quality sound at the same time.

Price: $299

4. Medthusiast
What better way to show off your passion and love for the medical field then an adorable, comfortable tank top, t-shirt, sweatshirt, or mug?! I absolutely love my medthusiast t-shirt. I wear it for my cardiology exams, because it actually has a real anatomical heart (my nerdy side is coming out). The company was founded by an amazing Physician Assistant who creates accurate, and adorable medical clothing and accessories. They have quotes such as: "Drop the Beat-Adenosine", "Its a Beautiful Day to Save Lives", "Scrubs and Scalpels", "On Call Hair Dont Care", "The Best Way to a Woman's Heart is Between the Fifth and Sixth Ribs".

5. Medelita Scrubs
Another staple item in the medical field is great scrubs. I LOVE Medelita scrubs. They are extremely comfortable and flattering. Their scrubs provide you with pockets in all the right places, and reinforced seaming for durability and improved fit. Their fabric is antimicrobial, odor-free, and shrink-free. As an extra bonus, you can get your scrubs embroidered by their phenomenal embroidery team!

Internal Medicine

WOWZAS . Internal medicine is truly the foundation of medicine . You see everything and anything and have to be prepared for what will walk through the door. The learning curve was steep for me, but I really appreciated the growth that came out of this rotation! I loved being in a rural setting for this particular rotation because I got to see and do A LOT. We were outpatient in the clinic, inpatient on the floor, in the emergency room, and in the operating room (minor procedures). The perk of being an internist in a rural setting is that you have so much autonomy in practice and so much respect by your patients . There is a scarce number of specialists around, so sometimes you have to try to be their specialist. I also loved the patient population in the clinic/hospital that I was rotating in. They were all so incredibly sweet, willing to share their personal and medical stories, and allowed me to practice my clinic skills on them. Plus, I learned so much beyo...

Surviving Didactic Year-Study Resources

In the words of Miley Cyrus, didactic year comes in and hits you like a wrecking ball. Anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, on my! The information overload is real, and you sit there wondering, “How am I going to learn all this?”. Don’t worry, you are not alone in these thoughts! I thought them too, and I am sure 99% of all other PA students did as well. Thankfully, our PA community is amazing and has provided us with awesome resources to aid us in our studying. Listed below are my top 5 favorite study resources that helped me survive didactic year: PICMONIC -         Picmonic is one of my favorite resources. It was great for diseases, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. It provides you with stories and pictures to give you creative ways to memorize key details about each topic. After you watch the video, it will provide you with a quiz to test you on those key details to remember. Also, below the video provided it lists each point they...

Realities of PA School

PA school is amazing and the community of Physician Assistants and students is even more wonderful. Social media has provided our field with a great platform. It has brought so much light and attention to what a PA is and all that we can do. This has been a positive aspect of social media for us! However, social media is also known for portraying only the "good" aspects of everything in our lives and can often hide the realities of what it means to be a PA student.  I had a great conversation with @tierney2pac on Instagram about this topic: "I think that even I'm guilty of this sometimes and I think it's due to the fact that it's so grueling and mentally challenging that you try to make yourself feel better about feeling so emotionally and mentally drained about accomplishing your dream. It's almost as if you feel guilty about being in a constant state of anxiety and even some looming depression when others would kill to be in your shoes. And I...
